More than 50,000 mattresses are discarded in the United States every
day. Because most charities and donation centers do not accept old
mattresses, donating them is often not an option. Mattresses pose a
significant and growing problem for waste management and the
environment.
An average mattress weighs 65 pounds and occupies 23 cubic feet of
space in a landfill. They have a compaction rate 400% less than
traditional garbage, which means they take up much more landfill
space relative to their size. Moreover, mattresses can cause
significant issues with landfill equipment and have a tendency to
rise to the surface ("float") over time.
Due to increasing regulatory challenges, higher disposal costs, bans
in some jurisdictions, and the overall environmental impact,
mattress recycling emerges as a necessary solution.
The mattress and box spring recycling process aims to reduce the
amount of material entering the waste stream by systematically
separating and recycling as many components as possible. This
process is intricate and labor-intensive.
During recycling, mattresses and box springs are carefully
dismantled. Each layer is separated, and all materials are
categorized by type. Foam padding is typically recycled into
products like carpet underlayment. Fabric and fibers can find
new life in furniture manufacturing, soundproofing materials,
and industrial oil filters. Metal springs and frames are
recycled as scrap metal, which is used to create new appliances,
building materials, and various other products. Wooden box
spring frames are shredded for purposes such as mulch, livestock
bedding, or as an alternative fuel source in manufacturing
processes.

and innovation for over two decades. Currently, we recycle more than
80,000 mattresses and box springs annually, with this number
